ISLAMABAD: The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency has unanimously approved an agreement with Pakistan for the application of international safeguards at Unit-5 of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant (C-5), Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced on Tuesday.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Dar said the approval marked an important milestone for Pakistan’s peaceful nuclear energy programme.

“This important development reflects the international community’s continued confidence in Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and its adherence to global non-proliferation and safeguards obligations,” he said.

The C-5 project is aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s energy security, supporting climate objectives, and contributing to sustainable economic growth by expanding the country’s low-carbon electricity generation capacity.

Unit-5 of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant will feature a pressurised water reactor with a gross generation capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW). The facility is expected to become operational by 2030, after which it will provide a significant source of clean and reliable electricity to Pakistan’s national grid.

Upon completion, the project will further expand Pakistan’s nuclear energy portfolio and help diversify the country’s power generation mix.

Currently, Pakistan operates six nuclear power plants with a combined installed generation capacity of approximately 3,530 MW, contributing an important share of stable and low-carbon electricity to the national energy system.
